A New Framework for Human-Centered AI Integration

Integrating AI With Equity & Care

Over the past year we have had the privilege of partnering with the Residency Lab at the Californians Dedicated to Education Foundation, and an incredible community of educator preparation leaders from across California, to explore one important question:

How can educator preparation programs prepare future educators to integrate AI in ways that are thoughtful, equitable, and grounded in professional judgment?

Through a yearlong Community of Practice, educator preparation leaders representing 33 educator preparation programs engaged in collaborative inquiry grounded with a focus on our Anchor Competencies Framework to imagine what responsible, human-centered AI integration could look like across educator preparation.

For our Center, this partnership represented an opportunity to focus on developing new educators’ social, emotional, and cultural lenses and competencies in the context of the growing conversation around AI.

Essential Competencies for an AI-Powered Future

While AI continues to transform teaching and learning, we believe it also reinforces the importance of preparing the human beings who are creating classroom environments and constructing learning experiences for students.

Our Anchor Competencies Framework is grounded in the belief that preparing educators extends beyond developing technical knowledge. It involves cultivating the competencies, mindsets, and teaching practices that enable educators to think critically, build trusting relationships, respond across differences, and make context-sensitive decisions that support the social, emotional, and academic development of all students.

Throughout this Community of Practice, we found ourselves bringing this group of educators back to these same ideas again and again in an effort to develop a new AI framework.
